The protocol SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) was developed by the company Netscape and designed to provide security during the transmission of sensitive data online. Version 3.0 of the protocol was released by Netscape in 1996 and formed the basis for the subsequent development of the Protocol TLS (Transport Layer Security), which now tends to replace SSL.
The SSL uses methods of encryption of data that are exchanged between two appliances of (more usually Computers) establishing a sure connection from each other via the internet. This protocol uses the TCP/IP for the transport of data and it is independent from the application that uses the final user.
Therefore it can provide services for safe transmission of information to higher level protocols such as HTTP, the FTP, the telnet and so on.
The SSL (Secure Socket Layer) virtually guarantees you a secure channel of communication and transmission of sensitive data between the user and the server, such as credit card numbers. Your customers feel secure in their dealings with you, knowing that their data can not be decoded by third parties. It is necessary for all on-line stores.
